HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

St Peter’s Hospital is a Catholic Non Profit making institution. It is situated in Jacobu, the capital of Amansie Central District. The hospital started operating as a Health Station by Orion (a non-profit organisation from Netherlands) in November 1987 at the request of the chiefs, the youth association and the people of Jacobu and its surrounding villages when there was no health facility in the area. The hospital was under the Catholic Diocese of Kumasi at the time it started operating. When the Diocese was divided into two in 1994/95 Jacobu fell under the Obuasi Catholic Diocese. It was registered under the Private Hospitals and Maternity Home Boards in Ghana and later on registered under Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG). The hospital began to enjoy all the other benefits under CHAG even before the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the government of Ghana and the Christian Health Association of Ghana was signed in 2006.
In 2007 when Amansie Central District was carved out of the Amansie East District, there was the need for a new District to have a District Hospital. Meetings were held between the Catholic Bishop of Obuasi and the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the Amansie Central District. An agreement was reached in accordance with the memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Health and CHAG for the hospital to be used as the Amansie Central District Hospital.
